BANNER ELK, N.C. --- Sophomore James Galvani
(High Wycombe, England) extended his goal-scoring streak with a
sensational brace on Wednesday night, lifting the Lees-McRae
College men's soccer team to a 2-0 victor over Belmont Abbey
College in Conference Carolinas play on Tate Field.
Lees-McRae (9-3-1, 6-1 CC) outshot Belmont Abbey (5-7-1, 3-4 CC)
by a 20-8 margin, including a 13-3 advantage in the first half, en
route to its fifth straight victory. Galvani netted his sixth and
seventh goals of the season, while Luke Duffy (Wakefield, England)
tallied an assist on the winner early in the second half. Sophomore
Thomas Rusling (Sheffield, England) kept a clean sheet with six
saves on the night, including several sensational stops to preserve
the shutout.
The match remained scoreless until the opening seconds of the
52nd minute when Duffy whipped a free kick from 35 yards out to the
top of the area, finding Galvani for a sensational header into the
bottom corner to give the Bobcats a 1-0 advantage.
Galvani doubled the margin to 2-0 midway through the 63rd
minute, making a run in from the left flank and delivering a
cracking strike into the far top corner from 20 yards out for his
second of the evening. The sophomore forward nearly completed the
treble five minutes later, sending a floating chip shot just wide
of the woodwork after making a brilliant run into the area.
Lees-McRae returns to the pitch on Saturday when the Bobcats
travel to Mount Olive, N.C. for a conference clash with Mount Olive
College at 4 p.m.
