Sullivan (Greensboro, N.C.) found the back of the net early in the
first half to lead the Lees-McRae College women's soccer team to a
1-0 victory over Belmont Abbey College in a pivotal Conference
Carolinas matchup on Wednesday night on Tate Field.
Lees-McRae (9-2-1, 8-0 CC) outshot Belmont Abbey (7-7, 6-2 CC)
by a 13-5 margin, including an 8-1 advantage in the second half, as
the Bobcats took a one-game lead in the conference standings with
Queens University of Charlotte's 2-1 victory over Mount Olive
College. Sullivan tied freshman Meagan Thornton (Millville, N.J.)
for the team-lead with her ninth goal of the season, as Brooke
Santerre (Port Republic, Md.) tallied her fourth assist of the
campaign. Freshman Kaitlyn Briggs (Oviedo, Fla.) kept a clean sheet
with four saves, registering her seventh shutout of the season.
Sullivan tallied the lone goal of the match late in the 14th
minute, taking a headed through ball from Santerre and sending a
brilliant finish over the keeper to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.
The score line read 1-0 for the duration of the match, as the
Bobcats nearly doubled the advantage to 2-0 in the 65th minute when
Thornton made a terrific run into the area before sending the
finish just wide of the woodwork.
Lees-McRae returns to the pitch on Saturday when the Bobcats
travel to Mount Olive, N.C. for a pivotal conference clash with
Mount Olive at 7 p.m.
