LAURINBURG, N.C. --- Four Knights scored in
double figures, and the St. Andrews Presbyterian College men's
basketball team won out-rebounded Lees-McRae College by a 47-24
margin en route to a 87-78 win in Conference Carolinas play on
Saturday afternoon.
St. Andrews (12-10, 8-6 CC) shot an even 50 percent from the
field in the game, including a 62.1 percent clip in the first half,
while holding Lees-McRae (6-15, 2-11 CC) to a 42.4 percent mark on
the afternoon. The Knights won the battle on the glass by a 47-24
margin, including a 35-16 advantage on the defensive boards, while
outscoring the Bobcats 34-24 in the paint.
Adam McFerran (Stow, Ohio) and Dairl Scott, Jr. (Pfafftown,
N.C.) led the Bobcats with 16 points each, while Tevin Friday
(Gastonia, N.C.) and Gerry Hairston (Winston-Salem, N.C.) added 11
and 10 markers, respectively. Daniel Sepokas (Illawong, Australia)
chipped in five assists as Scott tallied a team-high five
rebounds.
Marvin Jackson (Gloucester, Va.) posted a double-double with
game-highs of 22 points and 10 rebounds to pace the Knights, while
Michael Dunkins (Candor, N.C.) connected on 7-of-8 attempts for 18
markers. Aaron Christian (New Bedford, Mass.) and Antonio Moffitt
(Raleigh, N.C.) joined Jackson and Dunkins in double figures with
13 and 12 points, respectively, as Christian recorded eight
rebounds and a game-high eight assists. Ross Williams (Washington,
D.C.) also dished out seven assists as Marcus Connor (Charlotte,
N.C.) notched a contest-best four blocks.
St. Andrews never trailed, opening an early 13-5 lead on a
Jackson jumper with 16:35 left in the half. The Bobcats cut the
lead to 15-11 before the Knights responded, stretching the
advantage to 29-13 on a Moffitt layup at the 9:17 mark. Lees-McRae
would slowly chip away, cutting the margin to 44-36 on a McFerran
jumper at the 1:16 mark before St. Andrews closed out the half with
a 5-0 spurt to take a 49-36 advantage into the intermission.
The Knights carried the momentum in the second half, pushing the
lead to 63-45 with a 14-9 run that was capped by a pair of Williams
free throws with 13:27 to play. St. Andrews maintained the
double-digit advantage for much of the 12 minutes, extending the
lead to a game-high 21 points at 81-60 with 5:22 to play. The
Bobcats closed out the game on a strong note, equaling the final
margin of 87-78 with an 18-6 run over the last five minutes of
play.
Lees-McRae returns to the hardwood on Tuesday when the Bobcats
host Limestone College to continue their conference schedule.
Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. in Williams Gymnasium.
