MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. --- Lindsey Huntsinger
(Asheville, N.C.) clubbed two home runs and drove in five runs to
lead the Lees-McRae College softball team to a doubleheader split
with Mount Olive College to open the Bobcats' Conference Carolinas
schedule on Sunday afternoon.
Mount Olive (3-3, 1-1 CC) collected 20 hits on the day, plating
nine runs and swiping four bases as a team. Lees-McRae (6-4, 1-1
CC) also produced at the plate, tallying 18 hits, eight runs and
four extra base hits, including three home runs.
Huntsinger continued her early season tear with a 4-for-7 day,
driving five runs while tallying her third and fourth home runs of
the campaign. Paige Coleman (Thomasville, N.C.) added five hits and
two RBI, while Karli Robb (Hayes, Va.) posted four base knocks,
four runs scored, and her first home run of the season.
Laurel Gregg (Mars Hill, N.C.) got the nod in game one, allowing
four runs on eight hits in seven innings of work en route to her
second win of the season. Magen West (Whitney, Texas) made the
start in game two, allowing five runs in six frames to pick up her
first loss of the campaign.
Alyssa Bradshaw (Goldsboro, N.C.) paced the Trojans with a
4-for-5 day, tallying a double and four RBI, while Olivia Popin
(High Point, N.C.) and Anna Munizza (Centreville, Va.) each added
three hits. Munizza also chipped in two RBI as Robbin Kennedy
(Chesapeake, Va.) notched a trio of base knocks.
Sarah Saunders (Suffolk, Va.) made the start for Mount Olive in
game one, allowing three runs on four hits in two and one-thirds
innings of work before being relieved by Carly White (Ash, N.C.),
who took the loss after surrendering two runs on five hits over
four frames. Kristin Ware (Lancaster, Calif.) got the nod in game
two, allowing three runs and striking out seven to earn the
win.
Game One: Lees-McRae 5, Mount Olive 4 (Box Score)
Huntsinger and Coleman stole the show in game one, combining for
six hits and driving in all of Lees-McRae's five runs. After Mount
Olive tallied a run in each of the first two innings, Lees-McRae
answered in the third, taking a 3-2 lead when Huntsinger launched a
three-run home run to left field, plating Robb and Kierstie Moon
(Oxford, Ga.).
Mount Olive responded in the bottom of the sixth, scoring two
runs on RBI singles by Kassie Lowe (Staley, N.C.) and Munizza to
reclaim a 4-3 advantage heading into the seventh inning. Lees-McRae
rallied once again in the seventh, taking the decisive 5-4 lead on
a two-run single by Coleman that plated Huntsinger and Robb. Gregg
then retired the Trojans in order in the bottom of the inning to
secure the victory.
Game Two: Mount Olive 5, Lees-McRae 3 (Box Score)
Bradshaw exploded for the Trojans in the night cap, driving in
four of Mount Olive's five runs with a 3-for-4 effort. The teams
traded runs in the first to enter the second inning deadlocked at
1-1 after a solo shot by Robb and an RBI single from Bradshaw.
Mount Olive took the lead in the third, plating three runs on a
two-run double by Bradshaw and an RBI groundout by Kara Tucker
(Kinston, N.C.) to take a 4-1 advantage into the fourth. The
Trojans then stretched the margin to 5-1 in the fourth inning on a
run-scoring single from Bradshaw.
Huntsinger powered the Bobcats back into the conversation in the
fifth, launching her fourth home run of the season and second of
the day with a two-run shot, cutting the lead to 5-3 heading into
the bottom of the fifth inning. Ware shut the door from there,
stranding a trio of Bobcats over the final two innings to preserve
the win.
Lees-McRae returns to the diamond on Tuesday, Feb. 22 when the
Bobcats travel to Harrogate, Tenn. for a non-conference
doubleheader against Lincoln Memorial University. First pitch is
slated for 2 p.m.
