BELMONT, N.C. --- The Belmont Abbey College
men's basketball team placed five players in double figures and
shot a blistering 58.7 percent from the floor en route to a 118-72
win over Lees-McRae College on Tuesday night in Conference
Carolinas play.
Belmont Abbey (13-12, 8-9 CC) won the battle on the glass by a
49-31 margin, including a 17-10 edge on the offensive boards, while
converting 21 Lees-McRae (6-18, 2-14 CC) miscues into 36 points.
The Abbey posted a field goal percentage of 58.7 percent on the
night, including a 63.9 percent clip in the second half, while
holding the Bobcats to a 3-for-17 mark from beyond the arc.
Adam McFerran (Stow, Ohio) led the Bobcats with 14 points on
7-of-13 shooting, as Daniel Sepokas (Illawong, Australia) chipped
in 11 markers and a team-high three assists. Reshon Benjamin
(Valdosta, Ga.), Tevin Friday (Gastonia, N.C.) and DeAndre Tillman
(Charlotte, N.C.) each tallied eight points, as Sepokas chipped in
three steals.
Tyshawn Good (Jamaica, N.Y.) led the way for Belmont Abbey,
pouring in a game-high 30 points off the bench, while also notching
a contest-best five steals. Good knocked down 8-of-10 from the
floor, 4-of-4 from beyond the arc, and went 10-for-10 at the
charity stripe. Richard Barbee (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Jay
Council (Camden, S.C.) each tallied 19 points, as Kyle Phillips
(Lexington, S.C.) and Darryl Durham (Atlanta, Ga.) posted 17 and 11
markers, respectively. Council also dished out three assists, while
Barbee and Phillips each posted a game-high nine rebounds.
Both teams got off to a strong start in the first half, with
Lees-McRae opening a narrow 12-9 lead on a Sepokas jumper at the
14:26 mark before Belmont Abbey responded. After the Abbey knocked
down a pair of buckets and Tillman answered for Lees-McRae with a
jumper, the Crusaders launched a 20-5 run to open a 33-19 lead on a
Good triple with 8:28 to go in the half. Belmont Abbey continued to
dictate play for the remainder of the half, pushing the margin to
57-37 at the break on a three-pointer by Council with 1:03 left on
the clock.
The Abbey carried the momentum into the second half, opening the
period with a 21-11 run to widen the margin to 78-48 with 14:08 to
play. Belmont Abbey would hold on from there, closing out the win
with a 40-24 run over the final 14 minutes to equal the final
margin.
Lees-McRae returns to the hardwood on Thursday when the Bobcats
travel to Gaffney, S.C. for a 7:30 p.m. matchup with Limestone
College. The Saints won the season's previous meeting by a 68-54
margin on Feb. 15.
