SUMTER, S.C. --- The second-seeded Queens
University of Charlotte women's tennis team defeated seventh-seeded
Lees-McRae College by a score of 7-0 in the quarterfinal round of
the Conference Carolinas Tournament on Friday afternoon.
Queens' (14-3) duo of Erin Williams and Christina Rustscheff
opened the day with an 8-0 victory over Lees-McRae's (3-10) tandem
of Christine Vanard (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and Maria Andrade (Middle
Village, N.Y.), before Elena Mileva and Morgan Roberts notched an
8-0 win against Lyndsay Peagram (Greensboro, N.C.) and Kelsey Hiatt
(Mount Airy, N.C.). Amanda Poole and Hewit Hawn then defeated Raven
Harris (St. Pauls, N.C.) and Renee Roberson (Salisbury, N.C.) by a
tally of 8-1 to give the Royals a 3-0 lead.
Williams opened singles play with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Andrade to
give the Royals a 4-0 advantage, before Roberts swept Hiatt, 6-0,
6-0 in the fourth flight. Poole followed with a 6-0, 6-0 win over
Harris, as Blakely closed out the match with a 6-0, 6-1 victory
against Roberson.
Lees-McRae is expected to return three letter-winners from this
year's squad in rising seniors Peagram, Hiatt, and Harris. The
Bobcats posted a 3-10 record this season, including a 3-6 mark in
conference play as Vanard earned her fourth straight all-conference
honors.
