BANNER ELK, N.C. --- Kierstie Moon (Oxford,
Ga.) went 2-for-7 from the plate with a run scored and an RBI to
pace the Lees-McRae College softball team, but it was not enough to
overcome the Coker College Cobras in Conference Carolinas action on
Sunday.
Coker (17-17, 7-5 CC) swept the twin-bill by scores of 2-1 and
4-2. Three Bobcats (17-22, 5-5 CC) tallied two base knocks on the
afternoon, as Moon, Anna Carter (Hurdle Mills, N.C.) and Kim Coley
(Marion, N.C.) paced the attack. Laurel Gregg (Mars Hill, N.C.)
pitched seven strong innings in the opener, taking a no-hit effort
into the sixth inning before the Cobras broke through.
Jaclin Poole paced the Cobras with a 2-for-4 effort at the dish,
while Stacy Burr drove in two of the six Coker runs on the
afternoon. Sydney Greenwalt paced the Cobra strike, picking up the
victory in game one and following with her first save of the season
in the second.
Game One: Coker 2, Lees-McRae 1 (Box Score)
Coker took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning,
taking advantage of a two walks and a Bobcat miscue to plate a
run.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Meagan Knowles (West Palm
Beach, Fla.) ripped a single down the right field line, moving
Alison Armstrong (Bellingham, Mass.) to third with two outs. Moon
followed with a bloop single into left to drive in Armstrong for
the tying run.
The Cobras responded loudly in the top of the sixth when Katie
McElveen broke up Gregg's no-hit bid with a solo home run to left
field to give Coker the 2-1 lead. Greenwalt closed the contest
allowing one-hit over the next two innings to earn her seventh
victory of the season.
Gregg finished the contest allowing two hits and striking out
five in seven innings pitched, giving up two runs, only one of
which was earned.
Game Two: Coker 4, Lees-McRae 2 (Box Score)
Lees-McRae quickly opened scoring in game two, taking a 1-0 lead
in the first inning. Moon doubled down the left field line, moving
to third on a Karli Robb (Hayes, Va.) sacrifice fly to deep center
and scoring on a Lindsey Huntsinger (Asheville, N.C.) sacrifice to
deep left center.
The Bobcats extended the lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the second
frame, which opened with a Coley single to right center. Coley
advanced to third two pitches later when Carter ripped a single to
left center to put runners on the corners with no outs. Bryce
Campbell (Amherst, Va.) then laced a single between third and short
to drive in Coley. The Cobras then rallied late to score four over
the final three innings to earn the 4-2 victory.
The Bobcats return to the diamond on Thursday, traveling to Due
West, S.C. to take on Erskine College in conference play. Game
time is slated for 3 p.m. in Due West.
