BANNER ELK, N.C. --- The St. Andrews
Presbyterian College men's lacrosse team surged past Lees-McRae
College en route to a 16-6 win in Conference Carolinas play on
Saturday, outscoring the Bobcats by an 11-1 margin in the second
half after the teams played to a 5-5 tie at halftime.
St. Andrews (8-8, 2-3 CC) outshot Lees-McRae (0-10, 0-4 CC) by a
44-34 margin, while winning 19-of-26 face-offs and converting
18-of-23 clear attempts. The Bobcats held a 30-16 advantage in
ground balls while converting 18-of-24 clearing chances.
Danny Ives (Cheadle, Cheshire, England) paced the Bobcats with a
hat trick, while Quinn Struble (Durham, N.C.), Josh Shingleton
(Temecula, Calif.), and Michael LaSalle (Londonderry, N.H.) each
tallied one goal. Alex Weitzner (Hilton Head, S.C.) also recorded
an assist, as Andy Nesdill (Phoenix, Ariz.) posted nine saves
between the pipes.
Chris Michela and Daniel Shields led the Knights with four
goals, while Cameron Walsh added a hat trick and Alex Tindall
chipped in two tallies. Michela also posted two assists as Kyle
Davitt made 13 saves between the pipes for the Knights.
The Bobcats opened the game with a strong first quarter, taking
a 3-0 lead into the second period after goals by Ives, Struble, and
LaSalle. The Knights rallied in the second, answering with four
goals in the initial seven minutes of the period to claim a 4-3
lead on Michela's second of the game.
After Ives evened the score with a strike on the man advantage,
and Tindall reclaimed the lead for the Knights with 5:47 left on
the clock, Shingleton closed the period with a goal at the 2:41
mark to even the tally at 5-5 heading into the intermission.
The Knights rallied in the third quarter, holding the Bobcats
scoreless and pouring in six goals to claim an 11-5 advantage going
into the fourth period. St. Andrews opened the fourth with three
straight goals before the Bobcats ended the drought, trimming the
margin to 14-6 on Ives' third of the afternoon at the 7:17 mark.
The Knights then closed out the win with two goals in a 1:10 span,
capping the day's scoring at the 3:48 mark on a tally by Michael
Thomas.
Lees-McRae is scheduled to take on Pfeiffer University at 4 p.m.
on Tuesday in Misenheimer, N.C.
