BANNER ELK, N.C. --- After months of
evaluation, Lees-McRae College and Director of Athletics Craig
McPhail have decided to discontinue the College's men's golf
program.
"Our geographic location and climate makes it difficult to give
our young men the best resources possible to succeed," said
McPhail. "We have had to practice off the mountain during the
winter as our local courses don't open until April thus not
enabling us a place to practice or play."
The Bobcats recently posted one of the best seasons in program
history, recording a school-record seventh place finish at the
Conference Carolinas Championships under the direction of Coach
David Earnhardt. Freshman Thomas Buchanan (Bakersville, N.C.)
delivered the highlight performance of the season on the final day
of the conference tournament, carding the low round of the week
with a three-under-par 69 to vault into third place, tying a
program record for highest finish in the league championship.
Lees-McRae will honor those young men on scholarship if they
wish to remain at the College to earn their undergraduate degree,
and will release them if they wish to move on to play
elsewhere.
