BANNER ELK, N.C. --- The Lees-McRae College
men's soccer team earned their first victory of the season, and the
first career victory for first year head coach Lee Squires, with a
2-1 win over No. 22 Flagler College in the finale of the 2011
Michael Shope Memorial Tournament.
Scott Hudgins (Fort Myers, Fla.) headed in a beautiful corner
kick from David Palmer (South Shields, England) to break a 1-1 tie
and propel the Bobcats to the victory. The Bobcats overcame an
early second half deficit to earn the win, improving their record
to 1-1-0 on the young season.
Early in the second half, Flagler (1-1) took advantage of a
defensive miscue, pushing past the defense as Mark Hough worked
around the defender and placed a shot in the net from 16 yards to
give the Saints the 1-0 advantage in the 46th minute.
The Bobcats answered back at the end of the 61st minute when
Palmer found James Smith (Eastbourne, England) for the finish off
the near-side post to even the tally at 1-1. The Bobcats scored
the deciding goal in the 81st minute on Hudgins' header.
Thomas Rusling (Sheffield, England) allowed the one goal,
stopping a shot late in the contest to preserve the victory for the
Bobcats. Lees-McRae outshot Flagler 8-7, while besting the Saints
7-3 on corner kicks.
The Bobcats return to the pitch on Wednesday as they travel to
Hickory, N.C. to take on Lenoir-Rhyne University. Match time is
slated for 7:30 p.m.
