BANNER ELK, N.C. --- Junior DJ Brown (Anderson,
S.C.) poured in a game-high 22 points, going a perfect 6-for-6 from
behind the arc, to lead the Lees-McRae College men's basketball
team to an 82-68 win over Erskine College on Tuesday night in
Conference Carolinas play.
Lees-McRae (3-9, 3-1 CC) posted a blistering field goal
percentage of 62.2 percent in the contest, including a scorching
15-for-19 night from beyond the arc, while dominating the battle on
the glass by a 31-16 margin. Erskine (3-10, 1-3 CC) had a superb
night from the floor as well, posting a field goal percentage of 50
percent, while knocking down 10-of-19 attempts from three-point
range. The Flying Fleet also converted 16 Bobcats miscues into 31
points, while the Bobcat bench held a 27-23 scoring edge.
Brown led all scorers with 22 points, going a perfect 6-for-6
from the floor (all from three-point range) and converting 4-of-4
attempts at the free throw line off the bench. BJ Battle (Orlando,
Fla.) added 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting, including a perfect
3-for-3 night from downtown, as Asad Lamot (Mebane, N.C.) added 15
markers.
Daniel Sepokas (Illawong, Australia) and Jeremiah Henry (Semmes,
Ala.) chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively, as Henry recorded
a double-double with a game-high 11 rebounds. Corey Young (Bluff
City, Tenn.) added a game-high six assists, while Sepokas chipped
in five helpers of his own. Sophomore DeAndre Tillman (Charlotte,
N.C.) also posted a contest-best three blocks for the Bobcats.
Corey Sorrell paced the Fleet with 21 points, going 6-for-11
from the floor and converting 7-of-11 attempts at the charity
stripe. Mike Gabbard added 15 points and a game-high six assists,
while Travis Liner chipped in 12 markers with a perfect 4-for-4
night from downtown. Sorrell also posted a team-high six
rebounds.
The Bobcats rallied from an early 6-0 deficit in the first half,
going on a 15-0 run to take a 15-6 lead on Battle's second
three-pointer of the game at the 15:15 mark. Erskine countered with
a 13-5 spurt, closing the gap to 20-19 on a Gabbard jumper before
the Bobcats responded, closing out the period with a 25-12 run over
the final 10 minutes to take a 45-31 lead into the
intermission.
Erskine would answer in the second half, opening the period with
a 20-13 run to cut the margin to 58-51 on Gabbard's layup with
10:39 to play. After the Fleet trimmed the lead to 64-59 on a Liner
triple at the 6:28 mark, Young and Battle knocked down back-to-back
three-pointers to stretch the lead to 70-59 with less than five
minutes left on the clock. The Bobcats took control from there,
closing out their third straight win with a 10-5 run over the last
two and a half minutes of play to equal the final margin of
82-68.
Lees-McRae returns to the court on Saturday when the Bobcats
travel to Mount Olive, N.C. to take on Mount Olive College in a
pivotal conference matchup at 4 p.m.
