BELMONT, N.C. --- Tyshawn Good and Kyle
Phillips each posted at least 20 points to lead the Belmont Abbey
College men's basketball team to an 84-63 win over Lees-McRae
College in Conference Carolinas play on Wednesday night in the
Wheeler Center.
Belmont Abbey (13-7, 7-3 CC) posted a field goal percentage of
53.6 percent on the night, including a blistering 62.1 percent clip
in the second half, while holding Lees-McRae (5-13, 5-5 CC) to a
34.4 percent mark from the floor in the contest. The Abbey won the
battle on the glass by a 41-35 margin, including a 28-18 advantage
on the defensive boards, while converting 16 Bobcat miscues into 22
points.
Asad Lamot (Mebane, N.C.) paced the Bobcats with 15 points
(all in the second half) on 4-of-9 shooting, including a 5-for-6
night from the charity stripe, as BJ Battle (Orlando, Fla.) and
Jeremiah Henry (Semmes, Ala.) each added 10 markers. Lamot and
Daniel Sepokas (Illawong, Australia) each posted a team-best three
assists, while DeAndre Tillman (Charlotte, N.C.) recorded a
game-high three blocks. Tillman, Battle, Henry, and Lamot each
posted a game-high five rebounds.
Good led all scorers with 27 points, going 7-for-10 from the
floor and 12-for-14 at the free throw line while recording a
game-high four steals. Phillips added 20 points on 9-of-15
shooting, as Jay Council chipped in 13 markers with a 5-for-8 night
from the floor, including a perfect 3-for-3 mark beyond the arc.
Terrone Sheffey posted a game-high four assists, as Council and
Matthew Graves each notched a contest-best five boards.
The Abbey opened the game on a strong note, taking an early 13-8
lead on a jumper by Phillips at the 15:00 mark. After the Bobcats
cut the lead to 13-11, Belmont Abbey answered with a 9-2 run to
push the margin to 22-13 on a Good freebie with 8:07 to go in the
half. The Bobcats would close the gap to 26-23 with a 10-4 run,
cutting the lead to three on a jumper by Henry with less than two
minutes left on the clock before a layup by Good sent the Abbey
into the intermission with a 30-24 lead.
Belmont Abbey carried the momentum into the second half, pushing
the margin to 37-27 on a dunk by Phillips at the 16:41 mark. After
the Bobcats cut the lead to 38-32 on a triple by Battle, the Abbey
answered with a 16-0 run, pushing the advantage to 54-32 following
a Council layup with 11:16 to play. The Abbey would hold on from
there, closing out the 21-point victory with a 13-9 spurt over the
final three minutes.
Lees-McRae returns to the court on Saturday when the Bobcats
host Young Harris College at 4 p.m. in Williams Gymnasium.
