CHARLOTTE, N.C. --- The Queens University of
Charlotte men's basketball team forced 21 turnovers by Lees-McRae
College en route to a 78-57 win in Conference Carolinas play on
Saturday evening.
Queens (18-7, 13-1 CC) posted a field goal percentage of 50
percent on the night, including a 57.7 percent clip in the second
half, as the Royals knocked down 10 more shots than Lees-McRae
(8-16, 7-8 CC) while making 20 additional attempts from the floor.
The Bobcats shot an even 50 percent from the floor as well,
including a 55 percent mark in the first half, while edging the
Royals by a 33-31 margin on the glass.
DJ Brown (Anderson, S.C.) led all scorers with 18 points in the
contest, going 4-for-4 from downtown and 6-for-6 at the free throw
line, as Daniel Sepokas (Illawong, Australia) added 16 markers on
6-of-13 shooting from the floor. Jeremiah Henry (Semmes, Ala.)
chipped in eight points, as Sepokas dished out a game-high three
assists.
David Mason and Nate Blackburn each tallied 17 points off the
bench for the Royals, as Antonio Stabler added 16 markers and
game-highs of seven rebounds and four steals. Brandon Nichols and
Sean Eads each dished out a game-high three assists.
Queens jumped out to an early 10-2 lead in the first half,
opening the eight-point margin on a Stabler jumper before the
Bobcats evened the tally at 10-10 with eight consecutive markers by
Brown. After Queens regained the lead with an 11-4 run that was
capped by a Nichols dunk and Lees-McRae answered with a 10-6 spurt
to cut the margin to 27-24, the Royals closed out the half with a
12-4 surge to take a 39-28 advantage into the intermission.
The Royals would carry the momentum into the second half,
pushing the margin to 55-31 with a 16-7 run that was capped by a
Mason jumper with 13:55 to play. Queens held on from there, closing
out the 78-57 victory with strong play on both ends of the floor
down the stretch.
Lees-McRae returns to the court on Tuesday when the Bobcats host
North Greenville University in their regular season finale at 7:30
p.m. in Williams Gymnasium. The Bobcats will honor senior and
student assistant Stephen Haymer prior to the contest.
