ROME, Ga. --- The Lindenwood University men's
lacrosse team outscored Lees-McRae College by an 8-4 margin over
the final two quarters on Saturday afternoon to register a 14-9 win
in non-conference play on the campus of Shorter University.
Lindenwood (1-0) outshot Lees-McRae (1-5) by a 48-29 margin,
including a 30-10 advantage in the second half, while edging the
Bobcats by a 49-40 spread in ground balls. Lindenwood won 14-of-27
face-offs, as Lees-McRae converted 10-of-14 clears on the day.
Josh Shingleton (Temecula, Calif.), Brett Yusiewicz (Chapel
Hill, N.C.), and Danny Ives (Cheadle, Cheshire, England) each
tallied three goals, as Derin Vacca (Wake Forest, N.C.0 added two
assist for the Bobcats. Ryan Harrison (Lake Mary, Fla.) made 13
saves between the pipes, while also recording six ground balls.
Ryan Sparks (Hilton Head, S.C.) tallied a team-high seven ground
balls.
Andrew Peterson and McNein Hewitt each posted a team-high three
goals for the Lions, as Josh Arras chipped in a one and two
assists. Joe Roy added two goals, while Dan Ashlock posted seven
saves between the pipes for the Lions.
Lindenwood got off to a hot start in the first quarter, taking a
3-1 lead on a strike by Greg Cameron before Shingleton and Ives
answered to knot the score at 3-3 with 2:26 to go in the period.
The Lions would regain the lead just before the end of the quarter
before Yusiewicz evened the tally at the 5:15 mark of the
second.
Hewitt would answer with a pair of strikes just under one minute
apart, giving the Lions a 6-4 advantage before Ives posted the
final tally of the first half to cut the lead to 6-5 heading into
the intermission.
Lindenwood responded in the third, scoring three quick goals to
push the margin to 9-5 before Yusiewicz answered with his second
strike of the day. The Lions would tally three of the next four
goals, stretching the lead to 12-7 before Shingleton and Yusiewicz
trimmed the margin to 12-9 with a pair of strikes. Lindenwood then
added two goals in the final minute to equal the final margin of
14-9.
Lees-McRae returns to action on Saturday, March 3 when the
Bobcats host Coker College to resume their Conference Carolinas
schedule. The game is slated to begin at 2 p.m. on Tate Field.
