ATHENS, W.Va. --- Laurel Gregg (Mars Hill,
N.C.) tossed a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts in game one and Kim
Coley (Marion, N.C.) drove in four runs to lead the Lees-McRae
College softball team to a pair of shutouts and a doubleheader
sweep in non-conference play on Tuesday afternoon.
Lees-McRae (10-19) plated nine runs on 16 hits, while holding
Concord (10-10) without a run on seven hits. Coley drove in four
runs on four hits, including two doubles and a home run, to lead
the Bobcats, as Karli Robb (Hayes, Va.) added three base knocks.
Kristen Oakes (Lenoir, N.C.), Kierstie Moon (Oxford, Ga.), and
Brooke Sheridan (Rosman, N.C.) each tallied two hits, as Oakes,
Moon, Holli Crickenberger (Boydton, Va.), and Alison Armstrong
(Bellingham, Mass.) all drove in one run.
Gregg pitched a gem in the opener, tossing a one-hit shutout
while walking none and striking out 11. Crickenberger followed with
a strong performance in game two, allowing no runs on six hits
while striking out six.
Becca Gleason and Shelia Davies each tallied three hits for
Concord, as Brantlea Wood added a base knock. Stephanie Harper got
the nod in game one for the Mountain Lions, allowing three runs on
six hits in five innings of work. Karsyn Boothe tossed the final
two frames, surrendering one hit and walking one. Tamara Smith made
the start in the nightcap, surrendering six hits on nine hits and
walking two in six and one-thirds innings. Boothe pitched the final
two-thirds of a frame.
Game One: Lees-McRae 3, Concord 0 (Box Score)
Lees-McRae got on the board in the first inning, pushing across
an early run to take a 1-0 lead on a solo home run by Coley. The
Bobcats added a tally in the third to double the margin to 2-0 on
an RBI single by Crickenberger, before Robb stole third and scored
on an error in the fifth to push the lead to 3-0.
Gregg was impressive throughout the game, taking a perfect game
into the fifth inning while striking out 11 batters and retiring
the final nine Mountain Lions she faced.
Game Two: Lees-McRae 6, Concord 0 (Box Score)
The nightcap remained deadlocked at 0-0 until the top of the
fifth inning, when Lees-McRae plated three runs on doubles by Moon
and Coley to take a 3-0 lead. Lees-McRae added three runs in the
seventh on two hits, including an RBI double by Coley, to push the
margin to 6-0.
Lees-McRae returns to the diamond on Saturday when the Bobcats
travel to Wilson, N.C. to resume their Conference Carolinas
schedule with a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Barton College.
