HICKORY, N.C. --- The Lenoir-Rhyne University
women's lacrosse team outscored visiting Lees-McRae College by a
14-3 margin in the first half en route to a 20-5 victory in
non-conference play on Wednesday afternoon.
Lenoir-Rhyne (11-3) outshot Lees-McRae (1-6) by a 43-9 margin,
including a 29-5 advantage in the first half, while winning the
ground ball battle by a stretch of 41-16. The Bears controlled
21-of-28 draws on the afternoon, while converting 11-of-14 clear
attempts.
Katelin Rooney (Naples, Fla.) paced the Bobcats with two goals
and one assist, as Olivia Gudewich (Frederick, Md.) added a goal
and Katelyn Eudy (Newland, N.C.) and Brittany Bradley (Poulan, Ga.)
each found the back of the net for the first time this season.
Cynthia Wegner (Stem, N.C.) led the way for Lees-McRae with a
team-high three ground balls, as Jessica Travers (Asheville, N.C.)
made eight saves between the pipes.
Lauren Donovan led the way for Lenoir-Rhyne with three goals and
four assists, as Sarah Minick and Mary Minick both added a trio of
strikes. Stevie Dellinger, Kirsten Smith, and Sarah Gioconda each
chipped in tow goals, as Donovan tallied a game-high five ground
balls. Allison Senft and Amanda Cotto combined for a pair of saves
between the pipes for Lenoir-Rhyne.
The Bears jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first half
before Lees-McRae responded, trimming the margin to 5-1 on Rooney's
first strike of the day at the 15:36 mark. Following a trio of
goals by Lenoir-Rhyne, Gudewich found the back of the net for the
12th time this season with 7:44 to go in the period.
After Gioconda scored a pair of quick goals and Bradley found
the back of the net off an assist from Rooney, Lenoir-Rhyne closed
out the period with four strikes to take a 14-3 advantage into the
intermission. The Bears would outscore Lees-McRae by a 6-2 margin
in the second half, as Eudy provided the highlight of the period
for the Bobcats with her first collegiate goal.
Lees-McRae returns to action on Saturday when the Bobcats host
Queens University of Charlotte in Conference Carolinas play at 1
p.m. on Tate Field.
