BANNER ELK, N.C. --- The Lees-McRae College
men's volleyball team posted 12 service aces and a .406 hitting
percentage en route to a straight-set sweep of Washington Adventist
University on Friday afternoon in Williams Gymnasium.
Lees-McRae (10-7) won the match by scores of 25-9, 25-15, and
25-11, holding Washington Adventist (2-5) to a -.179 hitting
percentage and recording six blocks. The Bobcats posted a .406
hitting percentage on the afternoon, including a .524 clip in the
second set, while posting 33 kills and 23 digs.
Chris Flood (Louisville, Ky.) paced the Bobcats with a
match-high eight kills, while Kevin Morrison (Norfolk, Va.) and
John Lucas (Cincinnati, Ohio) added six and five smashes,
respectively. Sam Sheers (Centerville, Ohio) chipped in a
match-high 19 assists, as Flood posted a contest-best four blocks
(two solo, two assists). Efrain Negron (Caguas, Puerto Rico)
recorded a match-high eight digs for the Bobcats.
Wendell Phillips led the way for Washington Adventist with six
kills, as Fernando Taramaru added 10 assists and seven digs.
Anthony Berry also chipped in four kills and four digs.
Lees-McRae took control early, opening an 11-3 lead in the first
set following a service ace by Jose Ribas (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico).
The Bobcats would push the advantage to 22-6 with an 11- 3 run,
capping the spurt on a Lucas ace before Joshua Jones (Christmas,
Fla.) capped the set with an emphatic kill.
Washington Adventist fought back in the early moments of the
second set, taking a 10-9 lead on a service ace by Austin Kramer to
cap a 4-0 spurt. Lees-McRae would answer with a 14-4 run, surging
to a 23-14 advantage on back-to-back kills by Morrison, before
taking the set and a 2-0 lead in the match on a Shock miscue.
The Bobcats carried the momentum into the third set, opening the
frame with a 7-0 run that was capped by a Houston Callaway
(Thurmond, N.C.) smash. Lees-McRae would push the advantage to 20-9
on a block by Flood and Callaway, before closing out the set and
the match with a 5-2 spurt.
Lees-McRae returns to the court on Saturday when the Bobcats
travel to Misenheimer, N.C. to resume their Conference Carolinas
schedule against league-leading Pfeiffer University at 1:30
p.m.
