DUE WEST, S.C. --- The Erskine College women's
lacrosse team outscored Lees-McRae College by a 10-0 margin in the
first half en route to a 17-7 win in Conference Carolinas play on
Monday evening.
Erskine (3-8, 2-2 CC) outshot Lees-McRae (1-8, 0-5 CC) by a
32-17 margin, including a 16-6 advantage in the first half, while
edging the Bobcats, 22-17, in ground balls. The Flying Fleet
controlled 15-of-25 draws and converted each of their 13 clear
attempts in the contest.
Katelin Rooney (Naples, Fla.), Olivia Gudewich (Frederick, Md.)
and Anna DeLuke (Woodstock, Ga.) each tallied two goals for
Lees-McRae, as Cynthia Wegner (Stem, N.C.) added a strike of her
own. Rooney also chipped in an assist to go along with seven draw
controls, while Nicole Nixon (Charlotte, N.C.) paced the Bobcats
with a game-high six ground balls. Jessica Travers (Asheville,
N.C.) made nine saves between the pipes.
Alesia Jerrells led the way for Erskine with five goals and two
assists, while Samantha Burns added four strikes and three helpers.
Von McKenzie and Hillary Henry chipped in three and two goals,
respectively, as Kaitlyn Overley and Kelly Dalziel posted four
ground balls each. Overley made six stops in goal for the
Fleet.
Erskine jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first half, tallying
five goals in the opening 10 minutes as Jerrells scored four of her
five goals in the initial period. After Jerrells opened the second
half with her fifth strike of the day, DeLuke got the Bobcats on
the board with her sixth goal of the season 2:25 into the
period.
Gudewich and Rooney would answer an Erskine strike with a pair
of goals, before Erskine responded with four consecutive goals over
a five minute stretch. The Bobcats countered with four goals of
their own, highlighted by Wegner's first collegiate goal with just
under two minutes to play. DeLuke would cap the scoring for the
Bobcats with her second of the day with 58 ticks left on the
clock.
Lees-McRae returns to action on Saturday when the Bobcats travel
to Saint Charles, Mo. to take on Fort Lewis College on the campus
of Lindenwood University at 12 p.m.
