BANNER ELK, N.C. --- The Queens University of
Charlotte men's lacrosse team outscored Lees-McRae College by a
14-1 margin in the first half en route to an 18-2 victory on
Saturday afternoon in Conference Carolinas play on Tate Field.
Queens (6-5, 1-2 CC) outshot Lees-McRae (1-10, 0-5 CC) by a
50-16 margin, including a 33-6 advantage in the first half, as the
Bobcats edged the Royals, 41-38, in ground balls. The Royals edged
the Bobcats by a 14-10 margin in face-off wins, as Queens converted
24-of-28 clear attempts.
Danny Ives (Cheadle, Cheshire, England) paced the Bobcats with
his 27th goal of the season to celebrate his senior day, as Jeff
White (Middle Township, N.J.) also found the back of the net. Brett
Yusiewicz (Chapel Hill, N.C.) tallied an assist, as Ryan Harrison
(Lake Mary, Fla.) posted 14 saves and seven ground balls.
Derin Vacca (Wake Forest, N.C.) and Ryan Sparks (Hilton Head,
S.C.) each recorded six ground balls and five face-off wins, as
Bryan Bosley (Hanover, Pa.) and Benjamin Shifflett (Clemmons, N.C.)
both caused three turnovers.
Andrew Hyland and Casey Hock each tallied three goals for the
Royals, as Matthew Michael posted two goals and three assists. Evan
Farkas and Hock both recorded two helpers, as Kenneth Stryker won
13-of-22 face-offs. Hyland and Nick Simonetti combined for seven
saves between the pipes for the Royals.
Queens jumped out to a 4-0 advantage before Ives responded for
the Bobcats, taking a pass from Yusiewicz and beating the
goaltender to cut the margin to 4-1 at the 6:00 mark of the first
quarter. The Royals would answer with a trio of strikes to take a
7-1 lead into the second, before tallying seven goals in the second
quarter to take a 14-1 advantage into the intermission.
After Queens pushed the margin to 16-1 with a pair of
short-handed goals in the third, White opened the fourth with a
spectacular effort, finding the bottom corner of the net while
taking a punishing hit to tally his second goal of the season. The
Royals would counter with a pair of late strikes to answer the
final margin of 18-2.
Lees-McRae is expected to return 14 letter-winners from this
year's squad, including rising seniors Sparks, Nick Netting
(Arlington, Va.), and Jon Batsel (Raleigh, N.C.).
