BANNER ELK, N.C. --- Four different Lees-McRae men's soccer players notched a goal in a 4-2 victory against Conference Carolinas rival King (Tenn.) Tuesday evening at Tate Field in Banner Elk, N.C.
The Bobcats (10-5-1, 5-3-1 CC) held an 11-4 shot advantage in the second half while scoring three or more goals for the third time in the last four contests. The Tornado (7-8, 5-4) was led by Eli Carrasco with four shots.
Sophomore Marvyn Rieger (Frankfurt, Germany) started the scoring and used a home-friendly bounce in doing so when he sent a ball deep into the box from beyond midfield and had it bounce high enough to get over King goalie Kari Sveinsson in the 14th minute.
King responded with a goal from Ryan Murphy at the 35:20 mark after his shot squirted through a group of LMC defenders.
Sophomore Maurice Kleinert (Hannover, Germany) took advantage of poor play from Sveinsson by connected on a header after Sveinsson failed to success grip the ball after a save at the 59:41 mark.
The Tornado tied it for the second time when Carrasco blistered a 35-yard blast into the upper left in the 65th minute.
LMC took the lead for good following a successful penalty kick from senior James Smith (Eastbourne, England) with 11:54 remaining in regulation.
Coach Lee Squires' squad added an insurance goal from senior Scott Alford (Hillsborough, N.C) when he found himself with an open net after a rebound from a save moments earlier.
Sophomore Nicholas Stover (Titusville, Fla.) made one save while earning the win.
Smith led both teams with six shots.
LMC welcomes Emmanuel (Ga.) Saturday at 3 p.m. for Senior Day at Tate Field.
Andrew Shoemaker (Cary, N.C.), Alford, Smith, Brandon Meade (Winston-Salem, N.C.), James Galvani (High Wycombe, England) will be honored prior to the match.
