BANNER ELK, N.C. --- A trio of Lees-McRae women's volleyball players registered at least seven kills while the team swept Winston-Salem State, 25-23, 25-16, 25-18, in a nonconference tilt Wednesday evening at Williams Gymnasium in Banner Elk, N.C.
The Bobcats (15-8) hit .225 or better in two of the three sets while junior Jariliz Cotté (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) paced both teams with 13 kills. The Rams (12-13) hit a sparkling .389 in the opening set, but failed to swing better than .031 in the final two.
WSSU took an early three-point lead following a Sydney Holland kill, 11-8.
Cotté and freshman Siarra Walker (Winston-Salem, N.C.) caught fire and produced two kills and two aces to spark a 5-0 run.
The Rams used a trio of kills from Olivia Owens to stretch their lead to four, 18-14.
Junior Allyson Schillinger (Spring Hill, Fla.) cranked out a pair of kills while Cotté delivered two more aces during an 11-5 run to cap off the set.
In the second, WSSU jumped out to a quick 8-5 lead, but saw it squandered following a 9-0 run by the Bobcats, powered by sophomore Avalon Liscio (Naples, Fla.).
Junior Jordan Banta (Virginia Beach, Va.) connected on one of her nine kills to push LMC's lead to seven, 17-10.
The Rams offense struggled while hitting a match-low .000 and ended the second set with consecutive attack errors.
LMC hit a team-best .270 in the frame.
A quartet of WSSU attack errors gave Coach Dave Schmidlin's squad a 7-3 lead in the third.
Schillinger used a perfectly-placed ace to make it 18-9.
The Bobcats staved off a rally and used consecutive Cotté kills to conclude play while LMC wrapped up its home portion of the regular season.
Schillinger dished out 17 assists while freshman Courtney Weathersbee (Raleigh, N.C.) had 16.
Cotté and freshman Madison Martin (Goldsboro, N.C.) impressed defensively with 13 digs each.
LMC travels to Mount Olive Friday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. for a Conference Carolinas tilt in Mount Olive, N.C.
