BANNER ELK, N.C. --- Senior Jacob Copeland supplied the match-winning goal in double overtime in a Lees-McRae men's soccer 2-1 victory against Erskine in Conference Carolinas action Saturday evening on Senior Day in Banner Elk, N.C.
The Bobcats (10-6, 7-3) continue their torrid run by claiming their sixth consecutive victory while outshooting EC 17-7. The Flying Fleet (4-10-3, 2-5-3) faced 17 shots, but only saw two saves from goalie CJ Cluck.
The win streak hasn't been accomplished since the 2011 squad matched the feat with six consecutive victories from Oct. 1-Oct. 15.
Cureton (Waxhaw, N.C.) tested Cluck early with a shot on goal in the 24th minute.
Cureton repeated himself in the 59th before a Jake Lochstampfor yellow card.
EC's Lochstampfor righted himself when he was able to squeak a shot through the five-hole of LMC's Gus Pederson at the 62:38 mark, giving the Flying Fleet a 1-0 advantage.
Coach Rich Wall's squad struck back quickly with the equalizer 46 seconds later.
Sophomore Thomas Deeley (Timaru, New Zealand) continued his impressive campaign when his attempt at a cross was redirected by a divot and squirted into the back of the net.
The remainder of the half was chippy while both teams combined for five yellow cards.
Sophomore Nathan Watt (Newcastle, United Kingdom) delivered a beautiful back heel touch to Deeley, who fed Cureton in front of the net in the second overtime period. Copeland (Raleigh, N.C.) wasted no time and blasted home the golden goal at the 102:20 mark.
Five seniors were honored and started the contest for the Bobcats.
LMC will be the No. 3 seed for the Conference Carolinas Men's Soccer Tournament and will host No. 6 Erskine Tuesday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. at Tate Field.
