BANNER ELK, N.C. --- The Lees-McRae women's soccer team fell 1-0 in a nonconference bout against Queens (N.C.) Sunday afternoon at Tate Field in Banner Elk, N.C.
The Royals (1-1) had five players record multiple shots, including four from Caitlyn Rodrigues and Sydney Michelin. The Bobcats (0-2) saw impressive play from sophomore Jessica Bunce (Matthews, N.C.), who made her first career start.
LMC's defense made a pair of magnificent plays in a three-second span when the back line blocked a pair of Queens' shots within three yards.
Senior Mallory Overholt (Grand Bend, Ontario, Canada) launched a bullet that pinged off the crossbar at the 8:58 mark.
The Royals scored the only goal of the match at the 55:12 mark when Alana Jefferson connected on a shot from 25 yards out. Jasmin Singh earned the assist.
Junior Ashley Ritter nearly tied it when she sent goalie Tori Danchak within inches of crossing the line with 30 seconds remaining in regulation.
Sophomore Kelsey Twigg (Barrie, Ontario, Canada) led the Bobcats with three shots.
Bunce made two saves.
LMC returns to action Tuesday at 4 p.m. when it hosts North Georgia at Tate Field.
