BANNER ELK, N.C. – Jordan Soares scored a career-high 18 points and Alexis Ammons chipped in 17, but those two performances proved to not be enough as the Lees-McRae College women's basketball team fell to Pfeiffer 74-65 in Conference Carolinas action Friday evening.
Neither team had any trouble of finding the bottom of the net in the first quarter as they shot a combined 57.5 percent from the field. Pfeiffer, however, was able to gain the advantage on the Bobcats due to its work beyond the arc draining five in the opening frame. The Falcons held a 27-23 lead after one quarter.
Both squads cooled off considerably in the second scoring just 25 points total. LMC closed the deficit to within two thanks to a jump shot by Soares to make it 34-32. The Falcons closed the quarter on a 6-3 run to go into halftime with a 40-35 advantage.
The Bobcats stepped up their work on the glass in the third out-rebounding Pfieffer 15-10, including six to one on the offensive glass. Despite their work in the rebounding department, the Bobcats did not cut into Pfieffer's lead at all as it extended its advantage to 44-34 heading to the fourth.
LMC outscored the Falcons in the final quarter, 21-20, but due to the double-digit lead Pfeiffer had built up through the first three quarters the Bobcats ended up dropping their eighth straight game, 74-65.
In addition to the performances by Soares and Ammons, Brea Forbes also had a productive game totaling 10 points and eight rebounds in 33 minutes of action.
Lees-McRae, now 1-11 and 1-5 in league play, will look to snap this losing skid tomorrow afternoon when it hosts Belmont Abbey at 2 p.m. LMC won the last meeting between the two teams last season, 90-70, in Belmont, N.C.
