Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Bobcats fall in their regular season opener at Newberry, 78-62

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Powered by 29 points from Meg Essex and 27 points from Shelby Britten, Newberry College handed the Lees-McRae College women's basketball team a 78-62 loss to open its 2017-18 regular season Monday evening.

Where Newberry found its niche Monday was in the paint. The Wolves outscored LMC in the paint by 16 points (34-18). The Bobcats were able to keep things close with Newberry in other shooting areas, including three-pointers made (7) and free throws (15 to 19).

The duo of Brea Forbes and Karli Mason led the Bobcats on the scoresheet against the Wolves. Forbes paced all LMC scorers with 13 points and Mason was not far behind with 12. Forbes also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds in the contest. Junior Markia Stacey also had a stellar statistical outing scoring nine points, grabbing five rebounds and dishing out a team-high six assists.

LMC will return to action Wednesday when it travels to Charlotte to take on Queens (N.C) University in another non-conference tilt. Tip-off for that game is scheduled for 6 p.m.
