RALIEGH, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College women's volleyball team dropped a four-set decision to Shaw University Friday evening in Raleigh, North Carolina. The loss moves Lees-McRae's record to 1-8 on the season.
Set 1: The Bears came out swinging in the first set as they hit a match-high .484 with 17 kills on 31 attempts in the frame. With the Bears' offense firing on all cylinders, there was little the Bobcats could do as Shaw won the first frame, 25-17.
Set 2: It looked like the momentum had shifted in the second frame. The Bobcats got out to a 14-10 lead on Shaw. The Bears, however, called a timeout to regroup and they did exactly that. SU went on to score the next six points following the timeout and 15 of the next 19 points overall to extend its lead to 2-0 over Lees-McRae with a 25-18 set victory.
Set 3: The Bobcats put together their best offensive frame of the match in the third hitting a collective .303 on 33 attempts. It was also not just one player chipping in either. Six different Bobcats registered at least one kill in the third with Lauren Arnold and Kaci Thornton pacing these efforts with three kills each. With the balanced offense working, the Bobcats were able to knock off the Bears, 25-22.
Set 4: In what proved to be the final set of Friday match, the Bears found the offensive groove they had in the opening set. As a team, Shaw hit .393 on 28 attempts with 14 kills. Backed up the stellar work offensively, the Bears opened up a 13-point on the Bobcats before eventually winning the fourth set, 25-14.
Stat Standouts: Sophomore Elissa Small paced all Bobcat attackers with 14 kills in the contest. Setting up Small and the rest of Bobcats was senior Courtney Weathersbee. Weathersbee picked up her fourth double-double of the season with 31 assists and 10 digs, which were both team-highs.
Next Up: The Bobcats will step back into league competition Saturday afternoon when they make the trip to Belmont, North Carolina to take on Belmont Abbey. First serve between the Bobcats and Crusaders is scheduled for noon.
