BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College women's basketball team fell to King University at home on Wednesday afternoon by a final score of, 69-53. The Bobcats were led by Makayla Smith who finished with 16 points and four assists.
The Bobcats and Tornado began the game neck and neck, trading baskets with every change in possession. Lees-McRae was led in the first two quarters by Destiny Johnson who drained two three pointers in pivotal moments. The Tornado were able to close out the second quarter with momentum by getting to the free throw line, taking a 30-26 lead into the locker room.
Lees-McRae came out of halftime playing well and continuing to keep the game close. After a small King scoring run, the Bobcats turned up the pressure. Davinique Campbell drove strong to the basket and made the layup, cutting the King lead to just four points. The Tornado were able to respond with a flurry of offense and ultimately pull away from the Bobcats, winning 69-53.
Lees-McRae will return to action Saturday when they face Belmont Abbey at home. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
