NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Lees-McRae College women's lacrosse team fell in its season opener at Newberry Wednesday night by a score of 15-8. Freshman Makayla Willets led the Bobcats with four goals in the contest.
Lees-McRae started Wednesday's contest well as it scored the first two goals of the contest. Newberry answered with three goals of its own to pull in front briefly. LMC then pulled back in front with a pair of quick goals to go up 4-3. It was after that point that Newberry started to click. The Wolves netted 11 unanswered goals to close out the first half and to begin the second half to pull away from the Bobcats. Lees-McRae did mount a late flurry towards the end of regulation but it proved too little too late as Newberry finished off the 15-8 victory.
As mentioned earlier, Willets led the way for the Bobcats with four goals. Beth Haynes added three points with a goal and two assists. Patterson Jones, Christa Tumminello and Kalbie Grassett rounded out the scoring with one goal each for Lees-McRae.
Emily Davidson ended up taking the loss in goal for Lees-McRae Wednesday. Davidson made eight saves in 20 shots faced in the contest.
The Bobcats will be back in action next Tuesday when they travel to Southern Wesleyan for their first Conference Carolinas game of the season. First draw is set for 5:30 p.m.
