CENTRAL, S.C. – The Lees-McRae College women's lacrosse team opened up its Conference Carolinas schedule with a 14-7 road victory over Southern Wesleyan on Tuesday night. The victory improves Lees-McRae's overall record to 1-1.
In the first half of play, there was not much separation between the Bobcats and Warriors. Both squads had scoring chances and both cashed in a few of them. After a Bobcat goal got the scoring started, SWU scored five of the next six goals to take a 5-2 lead with 16:45 to go in the opening half. Lees-McRae, however, would battle back to take the lead briefly at 6-5 before SWU added another marker before the half was out to go into the halftime break tied at six.
The second half was where Lees-McRae separated itself as it outscored Southern Wesleyan 8-1 in the frame. The scoring in the second half was spread around well as four different Bobcats found the back of the net. The barrage of scoring from Lees-McRae gave the Bobcats a 14-7 advantage. Shortly after the 14th goal by Lees-McRae, the game was called due to field conditions and darkness giving the Bobcats their first victory of the season.
Overall, five different Bobcats scored Tuesday night. The duo of Haley Donovan and Kalbie Grassett had four goals each. Makayla Willets led the team with five points thanks to three goals and a pair of assists. Beth Haynes added a pair of goals and an assist, while Kelsi Williams netted first career goal to round out the scoring for the Bobcats.
Sophomore Emily Davidson picked up the win in goal for Lees-McRae on Tuesday for her second win of her collegiate career. Davidson made six saves in 13 shots faced in the weather-shortened contest.
Lees-McRae will be back in action on Saturday when it visits Mars Hill for a non-conference matchup. The first draw control between the Bobcats and Lions is scheduled for noon.
