MARS HILL, N.C. – Trailing by as many as eight goals at one point, the Lees-McRae College women's lacrosse team made a stellar comeback attempt on the road at Mars Hill on Saturday but came up just short, 16-13. The loss moves Lees-McRae's record to 1-2 on the season.
As mentioned earlier, Mars Hill looked like it would run away from the Bobcats to begin Saturday's contest netting 10 of the first 12 goals of the game. Lees-McRae was able to trim the deficit down to seven before halftime and then got as close as two goals down (15-13) with 2:28 remaining in regulation. Mars Hill, however, would hold on for the 16-13 victory.
Saturday's scoring from the Bobcats came from several players as five different players had a part of a scoring play in the matchup. Makayla Willets led all goal scorers on Saturday netting seven goals. Willets' seven goals is tied for the fourth-most goals in a single game in program history. Beth Haynes added four points (3g, 1a), while the trio of Haley Donovan, Kalbie Grassett and Kelsi Williams all netted single goals. In addition to Grassett's goal, the sophomore midfielder notched 13 draw controls against the Lions. The 13 draw controls by Grassett are tied for the third-most by any Bobcat in a single game in the program's history. The last Bobcat to tally 13 or more draw controls in a game was Sara Henderson back on April 17, 2018 against Emmanuel.
Emily Davidson took the loss in goal for Lees-McRae on Saturday dipping her record to 1-2. Davidson made five saves in 21 shots faced against the Lions.
Lees-McRae's next scheduled game is set for next Sunday when it welcomes Limestone to the High Country for a Conference Carolinas contest. That game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start time.
