Women’s Soccer blanks Belmont Abbey for sixth-consecutive shutout, 2-0

BANNER ELK, N.C.Taylor Barrineau and Pali Smith scored, while Mallory Roughton matched a career-high with nine saves en route to her sixth shutout on the season, to lead the Lees-McRae women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over visiting Belmont Abbey in the Conference Carolinas contest this afternoon to extend the team's winning streak to six games.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Both Lees-McRae and Belmont Abbey had scoring chances early, highlighted by a shot from Averee Andrews and a trio of saves by Roughton.
  • The Bobcats finally broke through in the 16th minute as Barrineau received a pass in front of goal from Alexa Todd and buried her third goal of the season.
  • The Crusaders had the final shot-on-goal for the half but another save by Roughton held the score at 1-0 after the first 45 minutes of action.
  • Lees-McRae extended their lead just three minutes into the second half as Smith took the ball from midfield and dribbled past two Crusader defenders and scored her first goal of the season in the 48th minute.
  • Both teams finished with eight shots in the second half, but the score remained 2-0 en route to a Bobcat victory.
  • Lees-McRae held a 16-13 edge in shots, while Belmont Abbey finished with a game-high four corner kicks.
 
FOR THE FOES:
  • Brianna Sroka finished with six saves in net for the Crusaders.
 
NOTEWORTHY:
  • The Bobcats have not conceded a goal in the last 559 minutes and 20 seconds of game time.
 
UP NEXT:
The Bobcats will visit Mount Olive on Saturday for a showdown filled with playoff implications. The first kick is slated for 3:30 p.m.
