Porsche, Smith score early to lift Women’s Soccer past rival King, 2-1

BRISTOL, Tenn.Gen Porsche and Pali Smith both scored first-half goals to lift the Lees-McRae women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over "Battle for the Blue Ridge Cup" rival King in the Conference Carolinas contest this afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Lees-McRae sprinted out of the gates with a pair of corner kicks in the first three minutes and was rewarded as Porsche scored her second goal of the season off a pass from Taylor Barrineau to give the Bobcats the early lead. Gwen O'Brien was also credited with the assist on the play.
  • The Bobcats doubled their score just over 16 minutes later as Smith scored her second tally of the season, unassisted, which would end up being the eventual game-winning goal.
  • King trimmed the deficit back to one goal in the 27th minute and nearly evened the score in the 44th minute, but a timely save by Mallory Roughton held the score at 2-1 at halftime.
  • Lees-McRae held a 6-2 edge in shots in the second half and finished with the lone second-half corner kick, to maintain its 2-1 lead.
  • The Tornado had one final scoring opportunity in the 88th minute, with the shot just missing frame to preserve the Bobcats victory.
  • Roughton finished with one save in net for the Bobcats.
  • King finished with an 11-9 edge in shots, while the Bobcats held a 4-2 advantage in shots-on-goal.
 
FOR THE FOES:
  • Presley Bacon scored the lone Tornado goal, off an assist by Megan Brody.
  • Kristal Garcia finished with one save in net for King.
 
NOTEWORTHY:
  • With the victory, Lees-McRae clinches another point in the season-long "Battle for the Blue Ridge Cup" competition between the two schools.
 
UP NEXT:
The Bobcats will host Southern Wesleyan on Senior Day on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 3 p.m.
