Women’s Lacrosse cruises past Montreat in season-opening win, 17-4

BANNER ELK, N.C.Kalbie Grassett finished with a game-high five goals, while Shannan Korovich tallied four goals and four assists, to pace the Lees-McRae women's lacrosse team to their first victory on the newly-renovated Tate Field with a 17-4 win over visiting Montreat this afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Grassett added an assist to go along with five draw controls and two ground balls.
  • Korovich finished with two caused turnovers and two draw controls.
  • Freshmen Sydney Floyd and Nim Castro both tallied three goals, while Haley Donovan chipped in a goal and two assists.
  • Lees-McRae stormed out of the gates with two goals within the first three minutes of action as both Floyd and Castro notched their first career goals.
  • The Bobcats scored the next three goals to claim a 5-0 lead before Montreat pushed across their first goal of the contest with six minutes left in the first stanza.
  • Lees-McRae used goals by Grassett, Floyd, and Korovich in the final five minutes to take an 8-1 halftime lead.
  • Madi Barry, Castro, and Grassett all scored within the first five minutes of the second frame to extend the lead to 11-1.
  • The Cavaliers scored two of the next three goals to trim the deficit to 12-3 with 19:41 left, but the Bobcats scored five of the final six goals en route to claiming the non-conference win.
  • Lees-McRae held a 23-18 edge in shots on goal and were 17 of 19 in clear attempts.
  • Abigail Brucks made 14 saves to earn her first career win as a Bobcat.
 
FOR THE FOES:
  • Isabella Knight scored three goals to pace the Cavaliers, while Dovie Yates also scored.
  • Erin Cleland registered six saves in net for Montreat.
 
UP NEXT:
The Bobcats open the 2021 Conference Carolinas regular season at Chowan on Saturday, March 6. The first draw control is set for 1 p.m.
