Late run lifts Chowan past Women’s Basketball in regular-season finale, 78-61

MURFREESBORO, N.C.Destiny Johnson and MaKayla Smith both scored in double figures with a combined six steals and six assists, but it was not enough as Chowan outrebounded the visiting Bobcats 47-32 and held a 23-11 edge in second-chance points en route to claiming a 78-61 win in tonight's regular-season finale.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Johnson finished with a team-high 11 points on 3 of 5 shooting from behind the three-point line, while Smith chipped in 10 points, five assists and five steals.
  • Jala Holloman and Aurora Roberts added nine and eight points, respectively.
  • Chowan sprinted out of the gates by scoring 12 of the first 13 points and scored a late jumper to take a 24-15 lead after the first 10 minutes of action.
  • The Hawks extended their lead to as many as 16 points on multiple occasions in the second frame and used a late free throw to claim a 41-25 halftime lead.
  • Lees-McRae outscored Chowan 20-16 in the third stanza but failed to shift momentum as the Hawks held a 57-45 lead at the final intermission.
  • The Bobcats cut the lead down to 62-57 on a pair of free throws by Smith with 5:23 left in the contest.
  • Chowan closed on a 16-4 run to clinch the conference victory.
  • Lees-McRae shot 36 percent from the floor and 47 percent from distance but were outscored 36-18 in points in the paint.
  • The Bobcats outscored the Hawks 28-17 in bench production.
 
FOR THE FOES:
  • Aniah Patterson and Destiny Robinson each finished with 18 points to pace the Hawks.
  • Monique Jones chipped in 14 points and a game-high 18 rebounds.
 
UP NEXT:
No. 8 Lees-McRae will visit No. 1 Belmont Abbey on Tuesday, March 2 for the Conference Carolinas Quarterfinals. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
