Women’s Volleyball wins five-set thriller over Elizabeth City State, suffers setback against Queens

CHARLOTTE, N.C.Kaden Hill posted a team-high 14 kills, while Lauren Xayavong tallied a game-high 34 digs, to lead the Lees-McRae women's volleyball to their first win of the 2021 season with a thrilling five-set victory over Elizabeth City State, before falling to host Queens to close out the non-conference tournament weekend.
 
GAME 1 BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Lees-McRae def. Elizabeth City State, 3-2 (20-25, 25-23, 25-21, 20-25, 17-15)
LOCATION: Levine Center – Charlotte, North Carolina
RECORDS: Lees-McRae (1-2), Elizabeth City State (2-1)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Hill paced the Bobcats in the early game with a team-high 14 kills to go along with three block assists.
  • Olivia Ney and freshman Hailey Gilreath tallied 12 and 11 kills respectively, with Ney adding three block assists and a solo block.
  • Lauren Xayavong tallied a game-high 34 digs, while Carlee Allbaugh posted her second-consecutive double-double with 38 set assists and 17 digs.
  • Bre Adamson and Madison Goins also chipped in 17 and 15 digs respectively.
  • Both teams traded runs for the majority of the first set, until the Viking scored four of the final five points to clinch a 25-20 win in set one.
  • Lees-McRae responded with a 9-3 run in the second frame and used a late kill by Hill to claim a 25-23 win in set two.
  • The Bobcats used a sizeable run in the third set as well and a pair of late Elizabeth City State attacking errors to win the third frame, 25-21.
  • After the Vikings clinched a 25-20 win in set four, both teams matched each other point-for-point in the final stanza until Lees-McRae closed the contest with an ace by Goins to clinch the non-conference win.
 
FOR THE FOES:
  • Three Vikings posted double-digit kills, led by Aasia McNeill with a game-high 15.
  • Elizabeth Kellum tallied 24 set assists and 25 digs.
 
 
GAME 2 BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Queens def. Lees-McRae, 3-0 (25-12, 25-18, 25-19)
LOCATION: Levine Center – Charlotte, North Carolina
RECORDS: Queens (2-1), Lees-McRae (1-3)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Ney led the Bobcats in the later game by tallying seven kills, while Hill added five kills and two block assists.
  • Allbaugh posted her third double-double of the season with a 15-set assist and 11-dig performance.
  • Xayavong chipped in a team-high 16 digs, while Goin added 11 digs.
  • Queens used a 14-4 run in the first set to grab momentum and use a final kill to claim a 25-12 win in set one.
  • The Lions sprinted out of the gates in the second set, by winning 12 of the first 15 points, and held off a late Lees-McRae rally to win set two, 25-18.
  • Queens won the third set, 25-19, to clinch the non-conference victory.
 
FOR THE FOES:
  • Grace Giunta finished with a game-high 13 kills to pace the Lions.
  • Brooke Farley chipped in 30 set assists and 10 digs.
 
UP NEXT:
The Bobcats will return to the court next Friday as they open the King (Tenn.) Tournament against Emory & Henry at 12 p.m.
