Men’s Volleyball sweeps Benedict for first win under head coach Pono Yin

BANNER ELK, N.C.Michael Marsans tallied eight kills, four service aces, and three digs, while Bradley Peters and Steven Nalls finished with a team-high 14 assists and a team-high four digs respectively, as the Lees-McRae men's volleyball team clinched their first win under new coach Pono Yin with a straight-set sweep of visiting Benedict in the non-conference match this evening.

FINAL SCORE: Lees-McRae def. Benedict, 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-13)
LOCATION: McNair & Debi Tornow Court – Banner Elk, North Carolina
RECORDS: Lees-McRae (1-1), Benedict (0-2)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Marsans finished with a .353 hitting percentage to pace the Bobcats in kills, while Peters also chipped in three kills and a solo block.
  • M.J. Doyle added four kills and a service ace, while Nicholas Brewster chipped in two kills, two block assists and three digs.
  • Lees-McRae sprinted out of the gates by scoring six of the first eight points but failed to hold momentum as the score was tied at 13-13.
  • The Bobcats closed the first set on a 12-5 run and used a pair of late kills by Peters and Brewster to win the opening frame, 25-18.
  • Lees-McRae scored 18 of the first 26 points in the second set and held off a late Tigers rally to take a 2-0 sets lead with a 25-16 win in set two.
  • The Bobcats once again started off with a big lead in the third frame, scoring 18 of the firs 23 points, and used a late service ace by Max Kuntz and a Benedict service error to clinch the non-conference win.
  • Lees-McRae held an 11-1 edge in service aces, a 23-18 edge in kills, and finished with all three of the match's blocks.
 
FOR THE FOES:
  • Donovan Wilmott and Benjamin Attles both finished with a team-high five kills to pace the Tigers.
 
UP NEXT:
The Bobcats will host Bluefield College tomorrow in another non-conference match at 2 p.m. on the McNair & Debi Tornow Court.
