BANNER ELK, N.C. -- Lees-McRae Athletics recently began renovations and facility enhancements to the Outdoor Tennis Courts at the Fred I. Dickerson Athletic Complex. Construction began in August and is scheduled to be completed later this fall. Among the new improvements will be a pavilion and new surfaces for the six outdoor tennis courts adjacent to Tate Field.
"This was much needed and recognized by our wonderful tennis community in Banner Elk through interactions with our student-athletes. It is a testament to those young people as ambassadors that sparked the generosity of our donors to make this possible," said Craig McPhail, Vice President of Athletics and Club Sports.
The pavilion, built by Grandfather Construction, will feature three bathrooms per gender and an open-air picnic area for pre and post-match gatherings. Lees-McRae is partnering with Carolina Courtworks, owned by Bobcat alumnus Ben Powell, for the renovation of the tennis courts. The tennis courts will feature a Pro-Cushion surface and an Australian blue paint scheme.
"This is much needed for everyone. Having restrooms nearby, a place to eat, bond and cheer on teammates and friends while playing on this innovative surface is exciting for all of us. It elevates our tennis program and builds on the strong tradition they have had at Lees-McRae," McPhail said.
Last winter, the CD Chesley Indoor Courts were resurfaced by Carolina Courtworks as part of the upgrades to the Lees-McRae College tennis program.
Renovations are funded by gifts received from generous donors in the Bobcat Club and the local tennis community. A recognition of donors will take place at a grand opening event in the spring. More details to come.
