Women's Volleyball Suffers Setback against Belmont Abbey

BANNER ELK, N.C.  – Sydney Stigler posted her fourth consecutive match with double-digit kills as Lees-McRae women's volleyball dropped the Conference Carolinas match to Belmont Abbey on Wednesday night.

THE BASICS

FINAL SCORE: Belmont Abbey def. Lees-McRae, 3-1 (25-21, 25-23, 22-25, 25-23)
LOCATION: McNair & Debi Tornow Court -- Banner Elk, North Carolina
RECORDS: Lees-McRae (3-13/2-4); Belmont Abbey (3-17/1-5)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • In the first set, the Bobcats jumped out to an early 8-3 lead after a double block by Rebecca Ryan and Annalaine Tew. Belmont Abbey seized control of the set with an eight-point run to take the opening set by a score of 25-21.
  • The second set looked similar to the first with Lees-McRae having the 6-4, but the Crusaders tied the set at six all and pieced together two-put runs to take the second set, 25-23.
  • Lees-McRae battled in the third with a five-point run to take an early 9-3 lead as the Crusaders could only close within three points the rest of the way. The Bobcats collected the set after a kill by Destiny Holley at 25-22.
  • In the fourth set, Belmont Abbey had an 8-2 lead and did not let up as the Crusaders collected the set and match victory in four sets.
  • Stigler collected 10 kills in the contest to go along with nine digs for the Bobcats. Tew and Hailey Gilreath followed with nine kills each with Julia Emore picking up five kills on the night.
  • Emore dished out a team-high 19 assists with Madison Goins having 17 in four sets. 
  • Bre Adamson paced the Bobcats with 11 digs as Holley tallied six blocks.

FOR THE CRUSADERS:
  • Caitlyn Faber started the offensive attack for Belmont Abbey with 39 assists and Mia Samaha had a match-high 13 kills for the Crusaders. Haley Davidson followed with 12 as Belmont Abbey outhit the Bobcats, .165 to .102, on the evening.

Lees-McRae is back on McNair & Debi Tornow Court Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. when the Bobcats welcome North Greenville for a Conference Carolinas showdown.
