Men's Soccer Battles Mars Hill to Scoreless Draw

MARS HILL, N.C. – Lees-McRae men's soccer made the short trip to face the Lions of Mars Hill where the two sides ended a 0-0 draw on Wednesday night. Jonathan Kienle had his second clean sheet of the season with three saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Laurin Boettcher and Gray Smith joined Kienle to stifle the attack of Mars Hill for 90 minutes as the Lions had three shots on target with Kienle keeping all three out of the net.
  • Maddox DiGiovanni had the first shot on goal for the Bobcats in the eighth minute of action, but Mars Hill's goalkeeper James Pierce made the stop. Kienle matched Price in saves with a stop off All-Region forward Peter Plougmand in the 31st minute of the first half.
  • To start the second half, Kienle collected his second save of the net off a shot from Jorge Perez Prada in the 47th minute.
  • Caden Pierce almost put the Bobcats on top a few seconds later with a chip over the Lions goalkeeper but the ball sailed over the crossbar.
  • Mars Hill went down a man in the 84th minute after a hard challenge from Lion Luke Manley. Jesper Jonsson had the last quality chance for Lees-McRae in the 88th minute, but the two sides ended in a 0-0 draw.
  • Mars Hill had the advantage in shots, 11-7, and shot on target, 3-2 and took 5 corner kicks in the match. 

FOR THE LIONS:
  • Mars Hill came into tonight's contest as No. 7 in the latest United Soccer Southeast Region poll.
  • Price made two saves in goal for Mars Hill and Braxton Robinson joined Plougmand and Perez Prada with a shot on goal.
 
UP NEXT:
Lees-McRae returns to Tate Field next Tuesday for a Conference Carolinas matchup with Southern Wesleyan. The kickoff is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
