Alex Biggerstaff Joins Men's Basketball Coaching Staff

BANNER ELK, N.C. – Lees-McRae College Head Men's Basketball Coach Desean Motley announced the addition of Alex Biggerstaff to the Bobcat program. Biggerstaff comes to Banner Elk after serving as an assistant men's basketball coach and recruiting coordinator at Milligan University in Johnson City, Tennessee.

"Super excited to welcome Coach Alex Biggerstaff into the Lees-McRae Bobcat family," said Motley. "He brings a wealth of experience, and his ability to connect and build trust with players is elite. Coach Biggerstaff will be a valuable asset to our program. We are excited to have him as part of the staff."

Biggerstaff recently concluded his third season with Milligan University and helped the Buffaloes earn their first Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) title in 2024-25. The Buffaloes ended the season with their first trip to the NAIA National Tournament since 2017-18. In his second year in Johnson City, Biggerstaff and Milligan finished with an overall mark of 14-13, while earning the AAC's fourth seed in the postseason tournament.

"I couldn't be more excited to join the men's basketball coaching staff at Lees-McRae College," said Biggerstaff. "Coach Motley is one of my best friends in the business, and Coach Trenton Burleson has been a friend since childhood; getting the opportunity to work alongside them was something I couldn't pass up."

In 2022-23, Milligan made the largest year-over-year turnaround in the AAC as the Buffs improved their conference record by seven wins. While at Milligan, Biggerstaff mentored and recruited Follie Bogan, the 2023-24 AAC Player of the Year and a 2023 alumnus of Lees-McRae. Biggerstaff also recruited 2024-25 AAC Defensive Player of the Year Handje Tamba.

Before coaching at Miligan, Biggerstaff served as the lead assistant and recruiting coordinator at Mars Hill University. In 2020, Mars Hill earned a spot in the South Atlantic Conference Tournament for the first time in a decade and had its winningest season since 2010. In 2019, Biggerstaff guided Jashawn Brooks to the SAC scoring title and recruited the 2021-22 SAC Freshman of the Year Kadyn Dawkins.

"I look forward to working with the players, coaching staff, and the entire Bobcat community to build something special on and off the court," said Biggerstaff. "And of course, I'm looking forward to bringing another championship to Banner Elk!"

Biggerstaff spent three seasons with Milligan as a player after beginning his collegiate career at UNC Asheville. He served as a team captain in his senior season and graduated from Milligan with a degree in exercise science in 2017.
