Men's Soccer Defeats No. 7 Francis Marion, 1-0

BANNER ELK, N.C. – Jonas Bartelt registered the penalty kick goal as Lees-McRae men's soccer defeated No. 7 Francis Marion, 1-0, in Conference Carolinas play this afternoon on Tate Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • In rainy conditions, Lees-McRae had an early chance with a goal called back in the 22nd minute. The two teams played to a scoreless first half with no shots on goal.
  • Francis Marion's Jose Coutinho made the first shot on goal in the 49th minute, but Jonathan Kienle made the first stop of the contest.
  • Conor Hart was taken down in the 18-yard box in the 50th minute and Bartelt found the back of the net on the penalty kick for the 1-0 advantage.
  • The two sides played a physical match in rainy conditions. FMU's Oskar Adasiak had a quality chance in the 68th minute, but Kienle kept the shutout throughout the remainder of the contest.
  • Lees-McRae improved to 9-0-2 overall and 5-0-2 in league matches. The Bobcats also moved their win streak to five matches in a row.
