Kevin Phillips enters his fourth year as an assistant coach at Lees-McRae. However, he is no stranger to coaching, with years of experience at the high school, college, and professional level. A two-time high school All-Stater and honorable mention All-American out of Jonathan Law High School (Milford, CT), Phillips led the state of Connecticut in scoring during the 1985-86 season with 29.4 ppg and to this day remains the All-Time Leading scorer in the city of Milford with 1,902 points. He also is second all-time to this day in career rebounds at Jonathan Law with 717. He went on to play at Sacred Heart University (Fairfield, CT) under legendary Coach Dave Bike and was a member of the 1988-89 team that advanced to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight.

Phillips then went on to a long coaching career that included a stint as an assistant coach for the Connecticut Skyhawks of the United States Basketball League, where he worked under NBA Hall of Famer Nate “Tiny” Archibald. He was the head coach at New Milford High School (New Milford, CT) in the 1993-94 season where he led the Green Wave to a 16-8 record and a berth in CIAC Class LL Quarterfinals. He then was the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator under Dave Bike at Sacred Heart University from 1994-1999 and was instrumental in helping guide the Pioneers to the NCAA Division I level beginning in the 1997-98 season. His next coaching stop was as the head coach at Notre Dame High School (Fairfield, CT) where his final team finished with a 17-7 record and reached the SWC Semifinals and CIAC Division II Quarterfinals in the 2005-06 season.

In 2024, Phillips was inducted into the Greater New Haven County (CT) Basketball Hall of Fame for his outstanding career as a high school player. Phillips also ran his own basketball camp for 18 years in Milford, CT, and coached several AAU teams in the early 1990s. Many of his former high school and college players went on to play professionally and also to coach at the high school and college levels.
