The Lees-McRae College Lady Bobcats took on the first place
Belmont Abbey Lady Crusaders in a Carolina-Virginia Athletic
Conference match up here on Tate Field on Wednesday evening.
Both teams dealt with the elements as the cold night air left a
light frost on the field during the game. At game's end, Abbey
kept their regular season title hopes alive as they pulled out a
2-0 victory to improve to 9-1 and remain tied with the Lady Falcons
of Pfeiffer University atop the CVAC standings.
The Lady Crusaders came out strong peppering Lady Bobcat
goalkeeper Anita Hekman (Toronto, Ontario) with various shots from
all over the field. Hekman was up for the challenge and kept the
score at 0-0 until Erin Kolb was able to put the ball behind Hekman
for a 1-0 lead at the 29 minute mark. The Lady Bobcats regrouped
and continued to play their game, matching the Lady Crusaders for
much of the evening. Unfortunately, after some heavy pressure from
the Lady Bobcats, Abbey was able to gain the clincher on a goal
mouth scramble in the 18 yard box. After a pair of shots from in
tight and a pair of saves the Lady Crusaders finally solved
Hekman. She was unable to control the rebound off of the second
save giving Kolb the opportunity to score her second of the
game.
The Lady Bobcats will conclude their season this Saturday as
they host the St Andrews College Knights in a CVAC match up. The
game will mark the final collegiate match for Seniors Meghan
Bofenkamp and Dottie Brown. Kick off is set for 1:00pm.
