The Lees-McRae College men's and women's tennis teams hosted
Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference opponent Coker College
Cobras this past weekend. The women were swept by the Lady Cobras
while the men went down to the wire, winning 5-4.
Alex Lord-Andrade teamed with Gili Sayag to open the day in
doubles play but fell 5-8 to Coker's top pair. Rick Velezquez and
Tom Sutton evened up the score for the Bobcats winning 8-4, while
the third doubles match had was forfeited to Coker, giving them the
2-1 edge heading into singles play.
The Bobcats were also forced to forfeit a singles match, both
forfeits on account of injury. With a 3-1 lead, Lord-Andrade and
Sayag both rebounded in singles action
winning 7-5, 6-4 and 7-6, 6-2 respectively to tie things up at
three. Braden Johns lost his singles match 1-6, 1-6 while Rick
Velezquez won 6-4, 6-3 to keep things tied up at four. Tom Sutton
easily handled his opponent 6-1, 6-0 to give the Bobcats the edge
5-4.
On the women's side, the Lady Bobcats struggled against the Lady
Cobras; however, Coach Paul Goode maintains a positive outlook as
the team continues to make strides forward. Coach Goode commented,
"I can't ask for more from the ladies, they are really working hard
and continue to take steps forward. Our youth definitely hurts us,
be they all give 100% every time they step on the court. The men
played great today with Sayag, Lord-Andrade and Velezquez each
beating quality opponents on the Coker squad. Tom's performance in
the final match was outstanding as he dominated from start to
finish.
The Bobcats will hit the road this weekend for games at Erskine
College Friday and Anderson College Saturday before returning home
to host Pfeiffer University Monday.
