BANNER ELK, N.C. - Senior captain Christine Calvert scored a
goal and had an assist to lead the Lees-McRae College Lady Bobcats
(11-8, 3-7) to a 5-0 senior day win over Southern Virginia (7-6-1)
Monday night at Tate Field in a non-conference match.
Brooke Santerre (Port Republic, Md.) put the Lady Bobcats on the
scoreboard in the 17th minute when she took a pass from Jessica
O'Leary (Millbury, Mass.) and scored to make it 1-0.
Calvert (Dallas, Texas) added the Bobcats' second goal in the 36th
minute when she blasted a long range shot to the near post for the
goal and gave the Lady Bobcats a 2-0 lead.
Vickie Rich (Arlington Heights, Ill.) extended the lead to 3-0 in
the 39th minute when she deflected a shot by Santerre past the
keeper into the back of the net.
Tiffany Rodman (Corona, Calif.) added the Lady Bobcat's final first
half goal when she took a long shot and beat the keeper to the top
corner in the 45th minute to make it 4-0.
Mary Gibson (Hendersonville, Tenn.) added the only second half goal
in the 87th minute when Calvert put on a through pass that left
Gibson one-on-one with the keeper for the easy goal.
Lees-McRae outshot Southern Virginia 29-6.
Marissa Middleton (Olathe, Kan.) made three saves to earn the
shutout for the Lady Bobcats.
Before the match, the Lady Bobcats honored lone senior and captain
Calvert. Calvert was a four-year starter and three-year
captain.
"Tonight's game was a true testament to Christine's leadership as a
senior captain in scoring a goal and having an assist," head coach
Renee Lopez said. "You can see Christine's passing of the torch to
the younger players, as freshmen Vickie, Brooke, and Mary and
sophomore Tiffany Rodman all also found the back of the net. It was
a fantastic group effort, and I'm pleased with our play
tonight."
The Lady Bobcats' next match is on the road at Belmont Abbey in
their final conference match Saturday, November 1st at 1 p.m.
