the Lady Bobcats outscored Conference Carolinas' foe Queens
University of Charlotte Royals by a score of 8-1 in game one in
women's softball action. However, the host school took advantage
of defensive mistakes on the part of the Lady Bobcats to take the
6-3 victory in second game of the doubleheader. With the split,
the Lady Bobcats stand at 10-6 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
The Royals are 2-10 (1-1).
GAME ONE
The Royals grabbed the lead in the bottom of the first
inning, getting three of their four hits against the Lady Bobcats'
Amanda
Dodson (Walnut Cove, NC). After grounding out the first two
batters, sophomore pitcher Dodson allowed the Royals' Mary Lee
Giurintano a double which placed her in scoring position. Candi
Marshburn then hit a single bringing in the go-ahead run. The
Bobcats recovered and the Royals were left with two runners on
base.
Lees-McRae, uncomfortable with Queens in the lead, fired up the
bats in the top of the second. Dodson, in support of her cause,
led off with a single, advancing on a groundout by Paige
Coleman (Thomasville, NC). Sophomore Nicole
Baxter (Denver, NC) then doubled to right center, scoring
Dodson. When Lauren
Gisler (Peachtree City, GA) struck out swinging, Baxter flew
untouched to third putting her in position to score. After Elaine
Beavers (Lebanon, VA) walked, captain Salle'
Horner (Lexington, SC) reached first base on an error by the
first baseman, scoring Baxter. Meagan
Knowles (West Palm Beach, FL) then fired a double up the
middle, gaining an RBI when Beavers scored giving the Lady Bobcats
three runs in the inning.
The Lady Bobcats rallied around Dodson, who pitched the full
seven innings, to shut the Royals out for the remainder of the game
while continually building up their lead. Lees-McRae added a run
in third when sophomore Paula
Fryar (Clinton, NC) hit a lead off home run. In the fourth the
Lady Bobcats took advantage of a walk and an error by the second
baseman to score an additional run, putting the score at 5-0.
After a scoreless fifth inning Horner led off the sixth with a
single, advanced to second on a groundout by Knowles, then stole
third allowing her to score when Anna
Carter (Hurdle Mills, NC) punched a single to right field.
With a single from Magen
West (Whitney, TX) and a triple from Beavers the Lady Bobcats
tied up the 8-1 game one win.
The loss for the Royals was credited to Megan Campbell.
GAME TWO
The Lady Bobcats started out strong in game two, scoring a run in
the first inning after leadoff batter Horner got her second single
of the day. Horner stole second, advanced to third on a Knowles'
groundout, and then stole home on a wild pitch to give the Lady
Bobcats the 1-0 lead. The Lady Bobcats then capitalized on two
errors, two walks, and a single by pitcher Magen West to add two
more runs in the second. The Royals, however, held LMC scoreless
for the rest of the game.
The Royals, who themselves were until this time held scoreless,
managed to get three hits, including a homerun to even up the score
three all in the bottom of the third. The Royals added two runs in
the fourth and another in the fifth to give them the 6-3 lead which
they held onto for the duration.
Queens accumulated ten hits during their six turns at bat,
facing West, then Nicole Baxter, then West again on the
mound.
The Lady Bobcats continue play tomorrow, traveling to Mars Hill
College in Mars Hill, NC for 1:00pm and 3:00pm games n
