Boone, NC--The Lees-McRae men's tennis team fell 7-0 to
non-conference Division I opponent Appalachian State Wednesday in
Boone, NC despite taking the Mountaineers to three sets in two
singles matches. The Bobcats fall to 7-8 on the season while the
Mountaineers climb to 8-6.
In doubles action the three flight of Shaun Sumner (Burlington,
NC) and Travis VanHoy ( Union Grove, NC) fought a close contest
with the duo of David Doverspike/Britton Webb, but fell 8-7 in the
end. No. 1 doubles Alek Mojski (Berlin, Germany) and Nandor
Solymosi (Drebecen, Hungary), playing in their first match
together, were defeated by a score of 8-6 by Lee Floyd and Bobby
Lake. Paul Muenow (Fort Mill, SC)/Romulus Teague (Hickory, NC)
were shut out by Ryan Brookshaw/Peter Jacobs to give the
Mountaineers the lead.
Freshman Solymosi, at No. 1, fell 6-2, 6-4 to his Division I
opponent Brookshaw, a senior. Mojski and Sumner both clawed their
way though three set matches before succumbing to ASU in the two
and three flights respectively. The Mountaineers completed the
singles sweep over #4 VanHoy, #5 Teague and #6 Blair Propert (Gold
Coast, Australia).
The Bobcats return to the courts Saturday, March 29 for a key
match against Conference Carolinas opponent Mt. Olive College.
First serve is set for 12:00pm.
