Mars Hill, NC--Despite taking two of the three doubles matches
against host school Mars Hill College (Mars Hill, NC) in men's
tennis action and forcing three singles matches to an extra set,
the Bobcats were edged out 5-4 by the Lions. The Lions improve to
6-1 for the year while the Bobcats fall to 6-5 (1-1 Conference
Carolinas.)
Junior Alek
Mojski (Berlin, Germany) and teammate sophomore Romulus
Teague (Hickory, NC) were able to fend off the attack by the
Lions' #2 doubles team of Camilo Bueno/Esteban Mesa, finally taking
the match 9-7. The second victory in doubles came from Paul
Muenow (Fort Mill, SC) and Travis
VanHoy (Union Grove, NC) who took the win at #3 by a score of
8-3 in their first doubles match together. At the one spot
sophomore Shaun
Sumner (Burlington, NC) and freshman Nandor
Solymosi (Drebecen, Hungary) were outscored 8-5.
After losing a tough three set match to Conference Carolina's
Men's Tennis Player of the Week Thomas Ollivier on Monday, Solymosi
responded by soundly defeating John Allen 6-2, 6-3 at #1. Mojski
lost a close 7-5, 6-3 match at the two, then VanHoy, moving up to
the three spot for the first time this season, fell in a
gut-wretching 7-6 (0), 7-6(3) contest.
Sumner took another point for the Bobcats when he defeated his
foe, Mesa, 6-3, 6-4 to garner his fourth win this spring. Teague
(#5) and Blair
Propert (#6), a native of Gold Coast, Australia, both battled
in three set matches before the Lions defeated them. Teague lost
his 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 while Propert won his first set 6-1, before
losing the second 7-6(4) and the third 6-0.
The Bobcats will resume play on March 15th when they host
Conference Carolinas opponent Coker College. Mars Hill will travel
to Bristol, TN to take on King College on March 8th.
