Wingate, NC--With junior Alek Mojski winning for the fourth time
in five opportunities, the Lees-McRae Bobcats defeated
non-conference opponent Wingate University 7-2 in men's tennis
action Wednesday afternoon at the Wingate University tennis
facility. The Bobcats improve to 9-11 overall and remain at 4-3 in
Conference Carolinas play. The Bulldogs fall to 8-11 for the
season.
The Bobcats nearly swept singles action as freshman Nandor
Solymosi (Drebecen, Hungary), at No. 1, continues to gain
experience on the court, defeating Mitchell Lvovsky 6-2, 6-1.
Mojski outlasted his opponent Jose Valarezo 7-5, 7-5 as he builds
momentum heading into tournament time. Shaun Sumner (Burlington,
NC) put himself back on a winning streak when he claimed a 6-4, 6-3
win over Braeden Patchell in the three slot.
At the four, Travis VanHoy (Union Grove, NC) battled through a
close 7-6(5) first set, then settled down to take the second 6-0
over Brendan Molan. Blair Propert (Gold Coast, Australia) jumped
up to play in the fifth flight and provided the Bobcats with
another victory, going 6-3, 6-0 over Louis Villarroel. Freshman
Jesse Laughrun (Burnsville, NC), competing in his second singles
match of the spring season, clawed his way through a lengthy match
before falling to the Bulldogs' Felipe Fidalgo 7-6(4), 4-6(11-9) to
give Wingate their only point in singles action.
The Lees-McRae duo of Mojski/Solymosi joined forces to defeat
Valarezo/Patchell 8-5 in No. 1 doubles, while Sumner/VanHoy added
another point to the Bobcats' tally when took the 8-3 win over
Fidalgo/Molan in the second flight. Propert/Laughrun fell to
Lvovsky/Villarroel 8-4.
The Bobcats resume Conference Carolinas play Saturday, April 12,
when they host Barton College. First serve is set for 2:00pm. The
team will round out its regular season play the following day in a
rescheduled match against Pfeiffer University at the Lees-McRae
Baker tennis facility.
