BANNER ELK, N.C. -- Lee Squires, a sophomore from Sheffield,
England, scored three goals to give the Lees-McRae Bobcats a 4-2
victory in the home-opener at Tate Field against the Francis Marion
Patriots Friday night.
In the eighth minute Squires took a ball down the far left side
of the field and found the far post to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead
over the Patriots.
The score remained 1-0 through the end of the first half, but right
after the start of the second half at the 46 minute mark Logan
Linton's (Cocoa, Fla.)cross found a sliding Kyle
McGimsey (Plant City, Fla.) and the back of the net to extend
the Bobcat lead to 2-0.
Squires' second goal extended the Bobcat lead to 3-0 when he ripped
a shot into the bottom of the net in the 59th minute. He notched
his third goal in the 71st minute on a header to the near post on
another cross from Linton to make it 4-0.
But the Patriots answered in the 76th minute when Ivan Juric took
an Emerson Peredo's cross and ripped a shot from just outside the
18-yard box to make it 4-1.
Kyle Clinton cut the lead to 4-2 in the 87th minute when he blasted
a freekick into the back of the net.
"We scored four great goals, but I wish we could have kept the
shutout," said Bobcats' head coach Chris Whalley. "When we played
well tonight we really showed our talent."
The Bobcats will take the pitch Sunday at Tate Field against
UNC-Pembroke at 4 p.m.
